African Safari NewsletterNovember 2006 HAPPY HOLIDAYS At this year begins to wind down it leaves me thinking about my life and the safaris I lead to Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa. I was fortunate to have been born in Tanzania and spent my formative years at a mission station called Iambi. My high school years were spent at a boarding school in Kenya named Rift Valley Academy, a school for missionary's children, perched high atop the escarpment with tremendous views of the Great Rift Valley. It was at Iambi that my African friend Simion Yakobo began to teach me the ways of the African bush. It was with him too, that I learned to speak fluent Swahili, a gift that has come to be very helpful as I lead my safaris. Together Simion and I would spend days
hiking through acacia dotted woodlands and follow animal trails through the
thick thorny brush that grew along the meandering streams and riverbeds near
Iambi. Simion taught me to identify each animal by its footprints and to
read the subtle signs left as they passed through. He taught me about their
movements and habits and how to spot them in the thick brush. Through time
I learned to move like him, almost silently, through the dry brush so as not
frighten the animals for which we searched.

We constantly searched for greater kudu, impala, warthogs, monkeys, hyenas, dik diks, a myriad of birds. and any other creatures of interest that inhabited the riverine forests. We always hiked with the hope of seeing the ever elusive leopard.

Sometimes dangerous, sometimes not, but we always knew that at any moment we could come upon something exciting. I was fortunate to know an African friend who willingly taught me the ways of the wildlife and also to have had parents who allowed me the freedom to explore, learn, and enjoy the people, the places and the wildlife of Africa. I loved it then and I love it now!!! Let me share my experience, knowledge and my passion for Africa with you on an African Safari, the experience of a lifetime!!!
