Photographing Kenya with Professional Wildlife Photographer Jim Zuckerman

This past September, I was privileged to lead a photographic tour in Kenya with world renowned photographer Jim Zuckerman as my co-leader. I was especially pleased because back in the early 1980's when I became interested  in photography I had purchased books on how to photograph wildlife, nature and landscapes and the most helpful to me, were written by Jim.

Four years ago I was selling my photography at an art show in Pasadena, CA, when I looked down the aisle and saw a beautiful photograph of a Bengal tiger. I had to go check it out! Upon getting close enough to see the signature on the photo, I read the name Jim Zuckerman.

With the excitement like that of a kid in a candy store, I turned and blurted out "Are you Jim Zuckerman?"  "Yes, I am." he calmly said.  Still not over the surprise of meeting him, I told him that he had been one of my photography heroes from twenty years ago.

It was a rainy, drizzly day, and not many people were at the art show, so Jim had time  to come over and look at my photography.  He liked my African wildlife pictures and mentioned that one day he would like to go to Kenya or Tanzania with me.  Jim is a very nice person and over the next year we got together to photograph a couple of times before he moved to Tennessee.

About a year ago, Jim called and asked me if I would consider co-leading a photo safari to Kenya with him, if he recruited the clients.  I thought it would be a great opportunity and was thrilled that Jim had asked me. He has led photographic tours all over the world with many of the best tour operators including Jo Van Os Photo Safaris, Palm Beach Photographic Center, UCLA Extension, Kent State University and the Venice School of Photography to name a few. Jim has photographed in over 50 countries and has led many tours, so it was a good match up and I was excited about the opportunity and the possibilities this might create!

We met our group on the morning of September 27th and headed to Amboseli to begin our safari. We spent the next two weeks photographing the wildlife and people of Kenya.  Jim is a great instructor and works well with people! He teaches photography and photoshop classes on line at  betterphoto.com. It was exciting having his expertise on the trip.  We enjoyed working together and had an amazing trip!!!!  On the last evening, as Jim was thanking his clients for participating in the safari, I was thrilled to hear him say that this was the best photography trip he had ever been on!  After arriving home, I phoned him to confirm that I had heard him correctly and asked if I could use his comment to promote my safaris. He said, "Absolutely!"  " Thank you Jim!"

We stay in first class luxury lodges and camps.

On the weekends through December 9, I am selling my photography in the Winter Fantasy Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach, CA.  It would be great to have you drop by for a visit and to share my latest photographs. It is a fun show for children as well!

The Sawdust Festival is located at 935 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, CA

I am located in booth #209. Hours are 10:00 AM- 6:00 PM.

Most of our tours are limited to 18 people, including the leaders. We have only 3 passengers per 9 passenger vehicle giving us plenty of space for our photo equipment. We can photograph through windows on BOTH sides of the vehicle and also the top, which pops up to create shade so you are protected from the hot equatorial sun.

As we leave the lodges, the vehicles separate and spread out, so we have six guides out looking for wildlife. They each have radios to let each other know what they find. This way no one misses out on seeing the wildlife.

The photos in this months newsletter were taken by Jim Zuckerman while on our safari to Kenya this past September. Jim is a great photographer and is especially good at anticipating what the animals will be doing before they actually do it. This allows Jim to be ready to capture the photograph that he had envisioned.

Jim, thank you for letting me show your photos in this newsletter. They are awesome!

On the trips, as leaders, we are happy to share our photographic knowledge with our clients. You do not have to be a great photographer to go on our trips, however you should enjoy watching wildlife because that is our main focus.

The villages we visit on safari allow us great opportunities to photograph the indigenous people. We like to visit the Maasai villages in both Kenya and Tanzania and also enjoy a Samburu village in Northern Kenya. We have found the people to be very friendly and willing to be photographed. I especially enjoy the villages because it affords me the opportunity to speak swahili with the natives. I asked the chief at the Samburu village, "How many of the white guides who come to the village speak to them in Swahili?" I was surprised when he said "Not many, there was one here about a year ago." I am not sure if he was referring to me, but that was the last time I was there. I have found that the people are much more receptive of us when I speak their language with them.

We came upon this mother and cub early one morning in the Masai Mara. Shortly after this picture was taken, the mother tried to hunt a nearby herd of gazelle. That time the herd was watchful, ready and escaped, but later in the afternoon she hunted again and was successful.

Africa is famous for spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Each day our morning game drive begins before sunrise. On our afternoon game drives, we return to the lodge just after sunset. This gives us the best opportunities to photograph this incredible beauty.
