February 2007 safari to Tanzania has been sold out for months. Click here for upcoming safari details.

Zebra family backlit just before sunset. To take advantage of the best light, on our safaris we leave the lodges as early as possible and return as late as we are allowed to.

I was excited as this scene unfolded in front of us. Two giraffes stood with their necks crossed with a third giraffe drinking and a herd of zebra in the background. I had waited a long time for this.

Suddenly everything changed! One of the giraffe slammed his head into the other's back and the fight was on!

Like two proud fighters they stood dealing each other blow after blow.

Neither one was willing to submit to the other.

We watched this battle go on for nearly an hour. Then we got word by radio that a nearby pride of lions was stalking a herd of unsuspecting wildebeest that was moving into their territory. We left the giraffe hoping to witness the lion hunt. Later, with daylight beginning to fade and darkness settling on the land, the lions had not yet made their move so we returned toward the lodge.  As we passed by the giraffes we could see them still fighting.  True gladiators! Fortunately they rarely do serious injury to each other.

Although they are the largest antelope, eland are very shy and often elusive animals. A large bull can weigh well over one ton (2000 pounds).
